Over the course of his life, James made many contributions to the Eton College magazine Etoniana, which published sporadically from 1904 onwards and was “a medium for Etonians and others for discussing all matters relating to the history and traditions of Eton – matters which might be found too abstruse or lengthy for the crowded columns of the “Eton College Chronicle“”. His first contribution was a “Description of the Stained Glass in the Windows of Election Hall” in issue 3, 1904, and his final in issue 49, published in 1931.
I acquired this bound volume of issues 1-28, which contains several of James’ contributions, as follow:
“Description of the Stained Glass in the Windows of Election Hall”, Etoniana 3, p. 38-39 (pictured below).
“Organs & Organists in the College Accounts”, Etoniana 24, p. 369-376.
“Chapel Inventories” [pts. 1-4], Etoniana 25, p. 385-392; 26, p. 401-408; 27, p. 429-432; 28, p. 441-448.
I am hopeful that I will eventually be able to source further issues of the magazine to complete the set of M. R. James’ contributions.
