Published in 1890, The Country Clergyman and His Work is the sole published work of M. R. James’ father, Herbert. As a devout evangelical clergyman, the Rev. James’ book is made up of a series of six lectures given to the Divinity School at Cambridge on the various different aspects and responsibilities as he saw them of his vocation. Herbert James was very keen for his sons follow him into the church (a career path which Monty ultimately resisted despite continual pressure from his father), and no doubt intended, in part at least, for this volume to be a guide for them to follow.
