Montague Rhodes James, by R. W. Pfaff (Scolar Press, 1980)

Probably the definitive biography of M. R. James which, while perhaps somewhat more impersonal than Michael Cox’s M. R. James: An Informal Portrait, is far more detailed in regard to James’ published works. Both James’ ghost stories and scholarly works are examined in detail in Pfaff’s work, making this an indispensable reference for collectors as well as those wanting to learn more about James’ life.
